Meeting Summary
Jason Crist will be discussing his Facebook AS3 API that is currently available on code.google.com. He’ll go over how to use it to connect to the Facebook servers (both locally when debugging as well as running the application from within a Facebook Application Page).
Once a connection is made we’ll go over some simple examples of getting information such as a list of a user’s friends, their albums and some other stuff.
Then we’ll dive into the nitty gritty of the API that you don’t NEED to know to use it. We’ll talk about a couple of design patterns that are being used (and used to be used). Because Design Patterns are awesome.
Presenter: Jason Crist, Senior RIA Developer
About the Presenter:
Jason Crist is a 9th degree black belt ninja from Central Kentucky. Wait, no he’s not. Well, he’s from Kentucky but he’s not a 9th degree black belt ninja. He’s been hacking on the Flash platform since version 4.5 and used to use it to make art. Since he figured out that the left side of his brain was way stronger than his right he’s been using his geek powers for the forces of good. He uses the Flex Framework (a lot) to earn his daily bread but finds that it gets in his way and misses the “good ‘ol days” of just straight-up ActionScript development. Jason works for Tickets.com building some pretty kick-ass tools.
Jason had the unique opportunity to be involved in the Facebook “F8″ event in San Fransisco where the platform was first opened up to developers. His “Flipbook” application (developed at Terralever) was the first 100% Flash application created for the Facebook platform. Work from that application grew into an API that allowed AS3 to communicate directly with the Facebook servers. It’s an open-source project on Google Code. Please help.
Giveaways
We will be giving away several “AZFPUG Gift Bags” which will include some cool Adobe swag, Flex 3 pockets references, ActionScript 3 cheats, and much, much, more.

You will see several different events from the “mx.events” package in action, as well as “custom” events created for special needs. See how to implement your own event classes to decouple parts of your application.
The demo and code samples for this presentation will cover mostly event handling, but will also touch upon basic uses of “mx:states” and “mx:transitions”.
