January 2010: Dependency Injection

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Meeting Date: January 27, 2010 from 8:00pm-9:00p,

Meet us at UAT (http://www.gotoandstop.org/?page_id=9) from 7:30 to 7:55 in time for seating and networking.

Meeting Summary

Dependency Injection is the new hawtness in the AS3 world.  Everybody is doing it and talking about it and getting it tattooed onto their bodies.  But if you have no idea what “DI” means to you or how it could make you a better coder and a better lover then you should come and see how it is done.
Two popular and wonderful frameworks will be discussed that offer DI tools; RobotLegs and Swiz.  And once it has been explained that DI can add years to your life (or at least make your code easier to write and test) then some of the OTHER fine patterns and benefits that these two frameworks offer will be discussed.
You know what DI is you say and you use it every day?  Good for you!  But you don’t know what the difference is between SwizzleLegs and RobotSticks?  Wondering why you shouldn’t just keep on using SomeOtherFramework to build every application that you ever work on?  If these questions intrigue you then you will benefit from the talk as well!
Bring your thinking caps, laptops and your favorite mxmlc build tool. This is gonna be part presentation and part lab.  The best way to learn is to do, screw up, and then fix it.  You will leave with the power of Dependency Injection and maybe a little bit of Mediation up your sleeve.

Presenter: Jason Crist – RIA Consultant

About the Presenter:

Jason Crist is a Sr. Awesomeness Engineer for Tickets.com (the maker of the grooviest ticket sales software in the world).  He likes to dabble in woodworking and photography and plays the guitar badly.  He has been building, breaking and fixing Flash Applications since they decided to allow hacks to stick code in those Flash Movies and has been writing ActionScript in Eclipse longer than any of you.  He’s bad at PHP, horrible with .NET and has just enough Java experience to get himself into trouble.  He knows the Flash Platform better than your mamma does though.

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Meeting Date: January 21, 2009 at 8:00pm

Meeting Summary

Are you confused with the new event model in AS3? Are you looking for ways to make your code more flexible and easier to read? Do you struggle with controlling the flow of your apps?

Come out and learn some basic techniques for building event driven applications in Flex. See event driven architecture put into action to control state and flow of your applications. You will see several different events from the “mx.events” package in action, as well as “custom” events created for special needs. See how to implement your own event classes to decouple parts of your application.

The demo and code samples for this presentation will cover mostly event handling, but will also touch upon basic uses of “mx:states” and “mx:transitions”.

Joey Lott not coming. Meeting still on. Yes, still free CS4.

Monday, November 10th, 2008

So, Joey had an emergency. It is out of his control and ours so he had to cancel. :-( I know…sucks but there are more important things he had to handle. Wish him best if you know him.

The meeting is still on. What we’ll do is just turn it into a showcase meeting. Everyone gets 5 to 10 minutes (pending how many involved) to showcase a product or project.

We are still going to give away the free CS4 Suite. Come out and get it! :-)

Hopefully you guys still come out and enjoy yourself. Please spread the word.

August ‘08 Meeting: How to program with ActionScript 3 with Ron Haberle

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Do you wonder what private, public, and protected mean? Do you struggle with Class and Interface? Are you confused or intimedated by the ActionScript 3 API Documentation? If so, you should come out for our next meeting.

Our next meeting will be a first of many, specifically designed to help teach our local community how to program with ActionScript 3.

Preso Description:
Come out and start learning ActionScript 3. These “learning sessions” will be conducted in an open fashion, so your presence and questions can shape the topics of conversation. The first meeting will focus on syntax, basic language structure, and tips on learning the language. We will cover the new display model and the new event handling mechanisms.

Presenter:
Ron Haberle, Senior Software Developer at iMemories

Co-Presenter:
Bob Wohl, Senior Flasher Developer at LimeLight Networks

Special Meeting 11/10/08: How To Architect Flex Applications with Joey Lott

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

We have the great opportunity to hear from Joey Lott on November 10, 2008 @ 8 PM. This will be our last meeting of the year due to the holidays and isn’t on our normal meeting date because of Joey’s travel plans. He’ll be in Tucson on the 10th presenting earlier that day and will make it here at 8 PM to speak.

Preso Description:
When building Flex applications the whole is greater than the sum of
its parts. You may know how to work with the pieces of Flex (layout,
styling components, data components, etc.) but it’s still rather easy
to get tangled up and frustrated when trying to stitch the piece
together into a coherent application. In this presentation we’ll look
at strategies you can use to build Flex applications in the best way
possible. Rather than presenting one boiler plate solution as the
“right way” this presentation looks at the bigger picture and common
patterns you can employ.

Presenter:
Joey Lott
Joey Lott is the author of Complete Flash Remoting MX as well as the co-author of the ActionScript Bible. Joey has been teaching Flash and ActionScript since 1999 when he first began training throughout Southern California. Joey has professional experience in the Internet industry beginning in 1996 including co-founding RightSpring, Inc. and consulting for YourMobile/Premium Wireless Services (J2EE B2C application) and Ads.com (leading the development of a J2EE B2B application).

2008 Kick Off Meeting: Adobe Flex and AIR Pre-Release Tour

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

The first meeting of 2008 is going to be a SWEET one! Not only are we giving away some sweet schwag but we will have Adobe in the house showing off the latest and greatest Flex/AIR sweetness.

So, here are the details. We WILL NOT meet on our normally scheduled day. We WILL meet one day earlier: January 22, 2008 @ 7:00. At 6:30 we will have an initial meet/greet/geek session so come out early and enjoy some snacks and networking. The actual preso will begin promptly at 7.

Now…the schwag. :-) We are giving away 1 free copy of Flex Professional and CS3 Web Premium. We will also have Flex branded schwag (not saying what type but most will probably want one…or two) and…{drum roll}…an iPod Nano!

This will be a fun meeting to kick off 2008. We will be officially joined with the Phoenix Flex User Group and Phoenix Adobe User Group for this meeting as well so there will be a good mix of individuals to mingle with.

To all those wondering if they should come…STAND UP AND BE ACCOUNTED FOR SOLDIER! ;-)

I’m excited! See you there.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention Flex.org/tour has more information on the tour in general. We will be joined by Kevin Hoyt.

Meeting Reminder: 10/24 @ 6:30 – Adobe AIR

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Tomorrow at 6:30 I will be presenting on Adobe AIR. I’ll attempt to cover as many questions/requests as possible and will try to code anything I’m asked within the set time period. :-)

The main things to be covered are:

1) File API

2) SQLite Access

3) Window API

NOTE: This WILL NOT be presented via Adobe Connect. This is more of a let’s kick back and geek out on some Adobe AIR type of meeting. Online would seriously be missing out of the interaction aspect. Don’t worry though…this is an official meeting and not a 100% social event. It just won’t be a “sit there and watch/listen to me” but more of a “sit there and watch/listen to me AND ask/interact the whole way through” type of meeting. :-)

AZCFUG will be joining us so we should be able to have a good number of people show.

Come join us!
